The narrator once loses his silk umbrella and gets a cotton umbrella in return. He thinks that the man who picked up his silk umbrella might be feeling wise. The opinion of the narrator is not good at all for such people. He thinks these people have the umbrella conscience. They are not deceivers or pretenders, but they pick up other people's umbrellas and don't intentionally return it. they have no sense of shame or apology

The narrator has a similar feeling for those who never return books to the library or others. He also has examples of religious persons who do such things.
