Soon after returning home, Pooja informs him of the eviction notice of the bank for failing to pay the last few EMIs of the home loan. When they are trying to find a way out of this crisis, CBI officers knock on their door. After a thorough search of his house, they ask him to accompany him to his office. It is here that Bansi learns about Bhonsle’s arrest for misappropriating Rs 1,200 crore in the Airoli flyover scam.
They have been let off because they haven’t found anything to blame. Relieved, Bansi went on to work as usual. But within days, one afternoon, the police arrest him from his office for stealing a check from his builder client, Sinha (Arif Zakaria), and also accuse him of forgery and bank fraud. Even though circumstantial evidence has piled up against him, Bansi asserts that he is innocent and it is up to his lawyer Birbal to grant him bail, despite strong protests from public prosecutor Jamsetji (Ranveer Shourie).
Director Manish Gupta (also credited with story, screenplay and dialogues), who has previously directed ‘Rahasya’ and penned ‘Section 375’, doesn’t waste time or footage in getting straight to the story from the first frame itself. For this courtroom drama, he comes up with an intriguing story of forgery, bank fraud and economic crime, which is rarely tried in Hindi cinema. He has handled the story cleverly, with some interesting twists, until the black, white and gray are clearly separated at the end.
Manish’s research on such cases, even in forensic and handwriting analysis, seems comprehensive and authentic, ensuring that you are engrossed in the proceedings both inside and outside the courtroom. The screenplay is quite taut and keeps you hooked till the end.
Honest Vinay Pathak keeps his bansi in check and portrays the trauma of his Chartered Accountant character very well. He once again proved that he is an actor who can do wonders when given an unconventional role. So does Ranvir Shorey, who effectively plays the role of Parsi public prosecutor Savak Jamsetji, with subtlety and without indulging in any stereotypes or typical traits associated with the community. Cinematography by Arvind Kannabiran and Raj Chakraborty praises Bhavani Patel’s art direction, while background score by Ranjit Barot and Som Dasgupta adds to the drama. To that end, ‘420 IPC’ is a good watch that neither leaves you behind nor bores you with any unnecessary or unwanted elements like songs or comedy tracks.
Gul Panag has done a good job playing Bansi’s strong supportive wife Pooja. Rohan Mehra is honest as Balbir Chaudhary, a young lawyer who will go to any extent to keep his client out of jail. Arif Zaharia, Manali (as Balbir’s female cop friend Vidhi Chitalia) and other supporting actors play their roles as expected.
