After Katha and Narasimha, director Boyapati Srinu and actor Balakrishna team up for their third film – a mass masala entertainer that relies entirely on the star power of the lead. The end result may make fans of the star shout ‘Jai Balaiya’ almost endlessly, but there is no denying that Boyapati fails to deliver on his promise.
Murali Krishna (Balkrishna) is a man of the masses in Anantapur surrounded by factions. He is a farmer who uses his income to build a hospital, throw a punch when needed, but also reform factions to care for nature and abandon violence. His character is almost a nod to the new direction that Balakrishna is set to take with his roles. District Collector Saranya (Pragya Jaiswal) is oblivious to the Principal Secretary Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with the help of Padmavati (Poorna) holding corrupt police officers accountable and digging deep into the wrongdoings in her district. And while enough time is spent on how Saranya falls for Murali and they both build a life together (after some awkward flirting over the seat belt, Tati Kallu and Telugu Tanam), this is not their story. .
It is the story of Murali’s long-lost twin Akhand (Balkrishna as an Aghora/Baba) who is taken away by a baba (Jagapati Babu) from his family because he has a destiny to fulfill. It is believed that he is born to correct the mistakes of Gajendra Sahu (Nitin Mehta), a cruel man who takes over an ashram and pretends to be a saint to hide his crimes. Also in this story is Varada Rajulu (Srikanth), another ruthless man who does illegal uranium mining in Nallamala under the guise of copper mining.
When Murali vows to protect the lives of those who are lost and Saranya has to fight to save what is left for her family, Akhand goes on a war-path to save the day. .
While unbroken. The basic premise of the film is interesting, especially the way Boyapati sets up a mythological story by weaving together collective moments in a way that soon loses the plot (literally) and Akhand and Murali tend to give collective moments. Inspires that certainly blow the whistle but do nothing for the story. He takes a detour to eloquence on everything from nature to the importance of God and temples to how women (like nature) are preserved, not to be destroyed.
When the film is covered in double entrenched dialogues, intro scenes with votives flying and women/girls being used as war collateral, there is no irony at all. None of this adds to the story. From the moment Akhand enters the frame, everything and everyone including the murli retreats. Saranya and Padmavati turn into trouble, Murali is lost in her own guilt and sorrow, and even the mighty Gajendra and Varada have no footing as Akhand has the power to protect Shiva himself. Balakrishna gets a chance to shine as he fills almost every frame of the film as a murli or Akhand. When he’s not showing off his cool new avatar in slow-motion shots that focus on his fake tattoos and piercing eyes, he dances and indulges in dialogue. And while in the beginning it is enough to give you a rush, but as the film progresses, it soon ends. Pragya may get an introduction (almost) similar to the protagonist, but despite giving her all to the character, she is lost in the proceedings. Poorna, Srikanth, Nitin, Jagapathi Babu, Kalkeya Prabhakar, Subbaraju and others have one-tone characters they wind up with.
Apart from the mass moments and fights (by Stun Siva) that are funny (but there are a lot of them), what works for the film is Thaman’s BGM. His score and Ram Prasad’s cinematography set the tone for the film, making the proceedings interesting even when it is clear that Boyapati is filling the runtime with nothing much to say. At the end of it all, the length of the film (2-hours-47-minutes) doesn’t seem appropriate for the story it wants to tell. You’re also left with the feeling that despite Balakrishna’s Aghora character Akhand taking so long, Boyapati misses out on the ability to do more with it.
Akhand is the kind of entertainer that will strictly work for Balakrishna fans as anyone who wants to spend time in a tub of popcorn can get tired. Seeing how long it has been for a star entertainer to be on screen, only time will tell if this is the film that drives people to theatres.
