The Great begins with a prologue, which is set in 1968, and involves three boys who are part of a card game that is taking place outside. Years roll by. Great in some ways, Karthik Subbaraj has a twist for Thalapathy. Here instead of our separated brothers, we have an estranged son who is eager to drive out his father’s companions. With Gyanam’s plan against them too, can Mahan ensure the safety of his family? Kartik Subbaraj takes his time to set up the plot (actually, the entire first half is just the set-up) and the plot starts in the latter half, but he does it in an entertaining way. The funky Evanda Enkku Custody song and a nearly single-shot stunt scene near a car are highlights in this part.
When Mahan and Dada are involved in a dangerous game, the scenes intensify. A scene between the two characters and Rocky (Sananth) is a highlight. The filmmaking in this part is typical Karthik Subbaraj… charming and scintillating, with terrifying camera work (by Shreyas Krishna) reflecting Gandhi’s shock and indecision. Surprisingly, barring such cases, the visual style we have come to associate with this director seems to be missing.
While the development of the plot isn’t that surprising (as of now, the twists in Karthik Subbaraj’s film are something else), the way the current events unfold in the prologue makes things interesting. But the filmmaker doesn’t completely pull off the thematic aspects in this story. It is, in a sense, the story of sons and fathers – Mahan and his father, Mahan and grandfather, Satyavan and Rocky, Gyanam and Victor – but it is hard to guess where Kartik takes this angle. Is this about fathers shaping the lives of their sons? Or about sons who rebel against their fathers? or both? In such cases you wish that the female characters, especially Nachi, were better presented.
Also, he elaborates when it comes to what it means to follow the ideal. We find that forcing someone to follow an ideal – however high it may be – is in itself a form of violence, but the director also ends this statement with words, which Seems completely unnecessary.
Thankfully, the emotional stakes go high and the actors deliver great performances. Vikram has an air of casualness that seems to have loosened up a lot, which only shows the actor enjoying himself with a performance that is his best since Raavanan in 2010. Dhruv matches him in several of the scenes, proving that he is a chip from the old block. Simha, Muthukumar, Simran and Sananth also deliver memorable performances that elevate the visuals and the film.
