As the title indicates, the series revolves around ‘Kando’ (scam) drawn by Matsya with the help of unique disguise in various important situations. And every episode has a specific title, keeping in mind a mythological character or important situation, especially from the Mahabharata.
It is also interesting the way in which the teachings of Ananda from the great epic are described in relation to Matsya. For example, the first episode titled ‘Abhimanyu’ parallels the 16-year-old son of Arjun and Subhadra, who enters the Chakravyuh without knowing the way out, while Matsya is trying to escape from prison as the prison superintendent.
Even though cliches are a dime a dime, Shiv Singh’s screenplay will keep you hooked. And there are times when you are able to predict, the narrative leads you to eagerly anticipate what is going to happen next.
Bollywood has produced a number of big-budget piracy films and one that immediately comes to mind with different looks of the protagonist is Dhoom 2, in which Hrithik Roshan resorts to multiple looks – including an old woman, a dwarf. Includes a very old cleaner and even a figurine for it. , Nonetheless, director Arun Bhuyan has done a fine job of this cat-and-mouse chase of a con artist working in places like Meerut, Delhi and Jaipur and a crooked cop on his heels.
At times, the script feels like it’s stretching, as is the case with the betting sequence. The actors are credited for ensuring that the onscreen proceedings of the time did not become a yawning celebration for the audience.
Ravi Dubey does full justice to his role and plays Matsya with conviction. While he is unrecognizable in various disguises, his first getup ‘Kabir Singh’ seems to be suffering from a hangover. He has effectively brought out his character graph from his younger days to his years of training in prison and the smooth operetta outside. Ravi Kishan has done a good job playing the role of Tejraj Singh and his character’s entry has set in motion a game of cat and mouse. Rajesh Sharma does his part as the devious betting kingpin Suri Saxena, who stops at nothing to recover his dues from losing gamblers. Piyush Mishra, who plays the storyteller in Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha (starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone), is good as Anand Pandit, a Mahabharata preaching criminal who trains Matsya to use his brain muscles And instead of killing them becomes a con artist to avenge the wrongs done to them and make it easier for them to attain salvation. Zoya Afroz and Madhur Mittal are decent as Patsy’s associates Urvashi and Raju Rajeshwar respectively and lend due support.
The production design by Saloni Dhatrak is good and cinematographer Manoj Reddy has captured the action well in the real locations of Delhi, Meerut, Jaipur and Sambhar where the story takes place. Mickey Sharma’s editing could have been even better, to accentuate the lagging parts.
The final few scenes of the show indicate that there is more to the Matsya scandal, and the game could get even trickier and faster in the next season. In short, Matsya Kand is an interesting watch for engaging storytelling and effective performances by Ravi Dubey, Ravi Kishan, Piyush and Rajesh.
