The best part of telling a story in an engaging way is to set the tone with the word go. And what could be better than a dramatic action sequence for a story that deals with a righteous warrior king, Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan (Akshay Kumar) and his pride, people and soil from slipping into Muhammad Ghori of Ghazni (Manav Vij) sheds light on his fight. After that, the narrative takes you into the king’s journey as a human being, and what inspired him to actually take Ghori to the battlefield.
The action pieces in the film are choreographed and shot well, but given that the film focuses on a war that has had an impact on our history, you would probably expect more war-time in this drama. The dialogues, while they give a dramatic effect to the narrative, sometimes suffer from slight dissonance. As the director and writer of this film, Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi has done a good job in keeping the narrative clean and focused, without any digressions.
However, after the interval, the woman-power sub-plot loses a bit of excessive focus. It momentarily departs from the film’s primary story. Also, none of the characters are given a particular accent or spoken accent, which is good and bad in parts. Good because it’s easy to follow for a mass audience, and bad because it doesn’t feel as authentic as it could have.
Samrat Prithviraj, despite his scale of the canvas, does not become overly grand – something we are used to seeing in his films of the same genre over the years. Production design and costume work in line with that. Even though the subject matter is complex and layered, it is designed to be simple enough for the audience to understand and engage with.
None of the songs in the album (composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy) really stick with you. The title track, which plays several times in the film, is a bit jarring. The honeymoon-song sequence and final song-dance sequence, if removed, would have probably given more space and time for battle, action and dramatic scenes. Many of the scenes are striking but VFX could have been used more efficiently.
Talking about the performance, Akshay Kumar’s attempt is seen to get into the depths of this historical character. He carries the tremendous weight of a king on his shoulders with dignity and poise. Sonu Sood and Sanjay Dutt, as Chand Vardai and Kaka Kanha respectively, add a lot of weight to the narrative when the drama unfolds. Sanjay, in fact, breaks the serious tone of the film at various points with humour. As a staunch loyalist of the king, Sonu’s character is very ‘Therav’ and mature, which stands out. Manushi Chhillar, who won the Miss World pageant in 2017, has made a confident and great debut in the film. In a film that revolves around a warrior king and the battlefield dynamics of that era, she keeps to herself and delivers a performance that presents her as a complete package.
On the other hand, senior actors like Manoj Joshi, Ashutosh Rana and Sakshi Tanwar have been rarely used in very minor roles. It would have helped the story a lot if there was a chance to see a little more drama featuring these actors along with the central characters of the story.
Overall, Samrat Prithviraj is a well performed and well directed family drama. It doesn’t have the splendor we’ve seen in other historical dramas, but enough to keep you invested and take you back to the pages of our glorious history.
